I’ve been to Taiwan five times, and no matter how many times I visit, I always find myself coming back to Ximending. It’s one of my favorite neighborhoods because everything is within walking distance. Whether you’re looking for amazing street food, affordable shopping, trendy cafés, cute souvenir shops, or just want to experience Taipei’s vibrant nightlife, Ximending has it all.

Ximending is often called the “Harajuku of Taipei,” but after visiting Taiwan five times, I’d describe it as the heart of the city’s shopping, food, and nightlife scene. It’s lively from morning until late at night, making it one of the best neighborhoods for first-time visitors.
What I love most about Ximending is how convenient everything is. You can spend the day shopping for clothes and shoes, enjoy delicious Taiwanese street food, relax in a café, browse cute souvenir shops, and end the evening watching street performers—all without needing another train ride.
As a solo traveler, I also appreciate how safe and easy it is to explore. The streets are always busy, the MRT station is nearby, and there are plenty of restaurants where eating alone feels completely normal.
Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or as a family, Ximending is one of the best places to experience Taipei.
Where is Ximending?
Ximending is located in Wanhua District, Taipei City, and is one of Taiwan’s most popular shopping and entertainment districts. It surrounds Ximen MRT Station, making it incredibly easy to reach from almost anywhere in Taipei.
Its central location also makes it an excellent base for exploring other attractions such as:

From Taoyuan International Airport
Option 1 (Recommended): Airport MRT + Taipei MRT
- Take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station.
- Transfer to the Blue Line.
- Get off at Ximen Station.
- Travel time: about 50–60 minutes.
Option 2: Airport Bus
A good option if you have a lot of luggage or arrive late at night.
Option 3: Taxi
The fastest but most expensive option, taking around 40–60 minutes depending on traffic.

Absolutely! As someone who has traveled solo to Taiwan multiple times, I can confidently say that Ximending is one of the safest areas I’ve explored.
Even late at night, the streets are filled with locals and tourists enjoying the shops, cafés, and street performances. I always felt comfortable walking around by myself, whether I was grabbing dinner, shopping, or simply taking photos.
Of course, always practice basic travel safety, such as keeping an eye on your belongings and staying aware of your surroundings, but overall, Ximending is an excellent choice for solo travelers.

Best Time to Visit Ximending
Morning (9 AM–11 AM)
Perfect for taking photos before the crowds arrive.
Afternoon (12 PM–5 PM)
Ideal for shopping and visiting cafés.
Evening (5 PM–8 PM)
My favorite time to visit. The neon lights come on, the atmosphere becomes more vibrant, and street performers start entertaining the crowds.
Night (8 PM onwards)
Great for food hunting and soaking up Ximending’s lively nightlife

ABC Mart
One of my favorite places to shop for sneakers. You’ll find brands like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Puma, and Converse, and there are often promotions worth checking out.

One of Taipei’s most iconic landmarks. Today, it’s home to local artists, souvenir shops, cafés, and weekend markets.
Walk the Rainbow Crossing
One of the most photographed spots in Ximending and a colorful symbol of inclusivity. It’s a quick stop but perfect for memorable photos.
Visit POP MART
Whether you’re a collector or just curious, it’s fun to browse the latest designer toys and limited editions.
Explore Ximending Night Market
The area truly comes alive after sunset. Enjoy street performances, browse local shops, and sample delicious Taiwanese snacks.
Try Xing Fu Tang
Known for its freshly made brown sugar boba and creamy milk tea, it’s one of the most popular drink stops in Ximending.
Eat Xiao Long Bao
No trip to Taiwan is complete without tasting these juicy soup dumplings.
Eat Ay Chung Rice Noodles
One of Taipei’s most famous street food stalls. The rich, flavorful noodles are simple but incredibly satisfying.
Visit the Hello Kitty-themed 7-Eleven
Crispy on the outside and chewy inside, it’s one of my favorite street snacks to grab while walking around Ximending.
Eat at Shao Lan Dong Handmade Noodles
A cozy local favorite serving freshly made noodles with comforting flavors.
Take a Vintage Newspaper Photo Booth Picture
One of the cutest keepsakes you can bring home! These retro-style photo booths print your pictures on a newspaper-inspired layout, making them a fun souvenir from your trip. It’s also a great activity if you’re traveling with friends—or even solo, like I did.
